Paru P. Kathpalia, MD

Dr. Kathpalia grew up in the Western suburbs of Chicago. He attended Northwestern University for his undergraduate studies and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Economics. While he was an undergraduate, he investigated calcium oxalate kidney stone formation with Dr. Murray Favus at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Following college, he matriculated at the University of Michigan School of Medicine in Ann Arbor, where he was elected to membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and graduated with distinction. He then headed to Boston for his Internal Medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

Upon completing his residency, he relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area for his fellowship in Nephrology at Stanford University Medical Center. He finished his fellowship in 2010, and stayed on for a two-year NIH sponsored postdoctoral research fellowship in which he studied the renal tubular mechanisms of salt sensitive hypertension. He is the author of numerous peer reviewed scientific publications and is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology.

He joined Lakeside Nephrology in 2012 and is the Medical Director of the Fresenius Garfield Dialysis Unit. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology. He has been recognized as Teacher of the Year multiple years from the housestaff at both Mercy/Insight Hospital and Weiss Memorial Hospital.

In his spare time, he enjoys traveling with family, meditation, and running; he ran the Chicago Marathon in 2022 in support of the National Kidney Foundation.
